BOB'S EMAIL:
Tom:
My name is Bob Poksay, HHS class of '53, formerly living in Cornell Heights. My dad owned the store at the bottom of the hill. I appreciate your work in keeping HHS classmates informed. I am enclosing the obituary of my brother, Lawrence "Butch" Poksay. Like many of his classmates, he left HHS toward the end of his senior year to enter the service. He piloted a B-17 during WW ll and later flew Airforce Two for several Vice Presidents of the USA. Perhaps sometime you will have use for info on one of our departed heroes. I believe he was in the class of '43.

HORNET ALUMNI HELP NEEDED!

Dear Hamilton High School West Alumni, Hello. My name is Pat Gardner and I am the current President of the HHW PTA. I am writing on behalf of the Hamilton High School West PTA to request your support of the PTA Scholarship Drive. The HHW PTA does not perform traditional fundraising activities like selling candy, pizza or candles. At the high school level there is so much fundraising that goes on for sports, clubs and extracurricular activities, it is difficult to compete with these larger groups. How does the PTA raise money? The PTA receives a portion of the membership dues and we work at the Blockhouse during home football games. This year with the rainy fall weather and no Thanksgiving Day home game we find ourselves under budget. Last year the PTA gave out scholarships to eight deserving graduates. Rather than cut back on the number of scholarships we offer, the PTA decided to reach out to the HHW alumni and ask for donations. The PTA needs to raise $2000. All donations would be earmarked for the scholarship drive. Donationas are tax deductable. There is no limit on the amount. Donations can come from individual alumni or from a whole class. Checks should be made out to HHW PTA and in the memo section please put Scholarship Drive. To acknowledge all those who participate in the PTA Scholarship Drive, a banner listing all the supporters will be displayed at the blockhouse during next years football games. Please send donations to:Helga Travaglini HHW PTA Treasurer2720 S. Clinton Ave.Hamilton, NJ 08610 Thanks for your consideration. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me at tpgardner@aol.com. Pat GardnerHHW PTA President

A TIP FROM TOM
AND FINALLY: THERE ARE PITIFULLY FEW PRE 1960'S HAMILTON ALUMNI LISTED IN THE OFFICIAL HHS WEBSITE. IT IS AN UNFORTUNATE FACT THAT AS WE GO BACK INTO THE 40'S AND EARLIER, THERE ARE FEWER AND FEWER ALUMNI LISTED. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CLASS OF 1952? CHUCK TAYLOR AND DON WRIGHT ARE THE ONLY ENTRIES FROM THAT CLASS.

Tom,
I have been viewing the HHS baseball team. Your text and the caption say 1936 but the file name says 1937. I know that Elmer Baggley, who is in my family tree, was born in August 1920. If he was a junior it would probably be 1936, if a senior 1937. Saul Gilman was my teacher and Joe Bacskay the father of my classmate.
Lois is overjoyed that the Steinert Class of 1966 (Marsha and Lee's) contributed generously to the Brearley fund and hopes they will have enough for a bench.
Alan
=============================================================
Hey Alan:
An explanation and a faux pas. The lower engraving is seperate from the upper; in fact, I inserted it into a space below the baseball photo. I believe the lower is indeed 1936. You will note that there is no "header" on the upper photo with a date as there is in most of my graphics. In retrospect, the top photo was undated and taken from an old scrapbook. I will assume from your email that it is 1937. Thanks for the correction.

1952: 55th Reunion Year - Missing Alumni , 1992

Hamilton High's class of 1952 will be celebrating their 55th reunion in this year of 2007. From my Hamilton High School folder in the local history collection, posting the a graphic which was given to me by Martha Bisbee Bogdan when the class was preparing to celebrate their 40th back in 1992. I assume the "missing persons" will be pretty much the same this year. My former next door neighbor Shirley Sneath Benton was living in Arizona the last time I spoke with her daughter.

1947: Charlotte Wilson Coyle 1933-2006

Judy and I were shocked when Jim Coyle called and told us of Charlotte's untimely death on January 6th. Judy and Charlotte were like sisters all through their childhood years, living just around the corner from each other, and hanging together through thick and thin. Indeed, Charlotte told Judy she was the reason she converted to the Catholic faith. I started school with Charlotte all the way back in Miss Kelly's Reception grade and through all grammar school and 4 years as a classmate in HHS '51. Charlotte was a straight "A" student all the way through school. I will always remember her as a wonderful, kind, and dear friend. As to Judy, with a tear in her eye, she said "She was my very best friend." May the Good Lord welcome her into his heavenly kingdom.

NOTE TO MY CLASSMATES: I regret to say that nearly every photo I took at our reunion came out blurry and I was completely shocked to see that I had set the camera dial incorrectly! Let me explain: The room was quite dark. The dial selector on my digital camera is the size of a dime. The print on that dial is just a bit larger than a mustard seed. Bottom line: WRONG CAMERA SETTING! So sorry. If any of my classmates who took photos of our reunion are viewing this, would you be willing to share them? Please send 'em to thomglo@verizon.net.

1942: ONCE UPON A TIME......

This delightful graphic is from my collection of Hamilton High memorabilia. In years long gone, it was the custom for a young lady to carry a dance card, wherein she entered the names of the lucky guys who would dance with her at the 1942 Senior Ball. This custom went out of style by the time I got to Hamilton High in 1951, but it sure was a quaint, and very charming custom!
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATION: The booklet and the accompanying pencil is seen against the second "layer" of the graphic. the page headed "Dance Order" is inside the little blue covered booklet.

Ms. Sue Proulx: Maintaining Musical Excellence

Strictly by a remarkable coincidence, my next "Sentimental Journey" column appearing in the Trenton Times "People" section this coming Saturday morning, recalls my memories of the Hamilton High School choir as I remember them these 55 years later. Today, September 11, 2006, I attended Hamilton Township's very moving memorial service in Veterans' Park, where Ms. Sue Proulx's "Select Choir" provided the vocal music. The service was an emotional event and the vocal offerings by those wonderful "Hornets" brought a tear to many eyes. I realized the magnificent musical heritage of the school is alive and well, thanks to the very talented Sue Proulx. God bless you and your wonderful singers, Sue!

1947: Kuser Annex

Hey! Even though a geographical situation put me in a neighborhood which required me to spend 9th grade in Kuser Annex, that certainly doesn't mean that I am not a legitimate, card-carrying "Hamilton Hornet!" Thanks to Bill "Beb" Peters, I have two of the school's fading mimeographed editions of the school newspaper, the "CRIER." Thanks to hi tech graphic manipulation, I have succeeded in enhancing the faded mimeograph type into crisp and very readable text. As a result, there are two pristine copies of the CRIER which will be on display at our 55th reunion next week, and then into the KUSER ANNEX folder in the Hamilton Library. Here we see a tribute to one of my very favorite classmates, with whom I went through all twelve years of school, the ever lovely Charlotte Wilson Coyle, who just happened to be chosen as our favorite student. Another post features Bobby Herrera, choir mate of mine and still a dear friend, who was honored in the male category in that same issue.

1951: THE WASHINGTON TRIP - The Day After!

Any HHS Hornet who went on the annual trip to Washington, D.C. retains memories which last forever. Even though it has been 55 years since Bus 2 went there, I remember all the fun we had. In retrospect, it gave all of us the opportunity to display our "worldly" oh, so mature existance. I must admit it was the first time I had ever stayed overnight in a hotel, but none of us would ever admit it!....We were experience, cigar-cigarette smoking adults who had been around the block a few times!

How well I remember that cute little "Sis" McGlynn. Hey, I also remember "Pretty Peggy" Trolle, too! Don't you love those bobbysox and Saddle shoes Sissy is wearing? By the way, her name is Alvilda. The last I heard she was living in a small town in central Pennsylvania. They were practicing for our spring entertainment, "China Boy," starring Carl Williams as the China boy. I was to have been in one of the leads, but I crossed Miss Jean Larzalere, who felt that I should give up my after school job and come to all the practices. I couldn't do that 'cause my mom needed the money. Bottom line, Jean Larzalere was completely unsympathetic to my plight, and banished me from ALL music and thespian entertainment at K.A.
