1978: SENIOR PROM CANDIDATES HHS '78

I'M SURE THE JUDGES HAD A HECKUVA HARD TIME CHOOSING THE PROM QUEEN FROM THESE LOVELY LADIES. ANY BY KNOW WHO WAS THE FINAL CHOICE?

1978: HAMILTON FACULTY HONORED

THERE THEY ARE, SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HHS FACULTY MEMBERS CELEBRATING THEIR LONGEVITY AS TEACHERS IN THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL IN THE UNIVERSE. DON'T MISS THE 70'S STYLE HAIR DO ON NORMALLY CREW CUT CARL ABBOTT. VERY COOL, CARL!

INCIDENTALLY, AS I WRITE THIS ON FEBRUARY 1, 2008, CARL ABBOTT IS STILL BRIGHT EYED AND BUSHY TAILED, HAPPILY VOLUNTEERING FOR THE FRIENDS OF THE HAMILTON TOWNSHIP PUBLIC LIBRARY AND ALSO FOR THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF HAMILTON TOWNSHIP.

1947: THAT "GOLDEN WAVE" WAS REALLY GOLDEN!

ONE OF OUR ARCH RIVALS BACK IN THE GOLDEN YEARS OF HAMILTON HIGH WAS THE VERY TALENTED GUYS FROM TRENTON CATHOLIC. THERE ARE MANY FAMILIAR NAMES ON BOTH OF THOSE TEAMS, NOT TO MENTION THE VERY POPULAR HAMILTON COACH, "KIP" BREESE.

1947: JEANIE PAGLIONE

SHE WAS JUST AS PRETTY THE LAST TIME I SAW HER. JEANIE WAS A CLASSMATE IN "THE CLASS WITH CLASS," HHS '51

1953:HERE COMES NUMBER 55 FOR HHS '53!

FROM MY NEIGHBORS JUST UP THE STREET IN THE 50'S DECADE AT HAMILTON HIGH, BOB POKSAY SENT THIS NOTICE AND GRAPHIC ANNOUNCING PLANS FOR THEIR 55TH REUNION.
MANY THANKS, BOB.
=================================================================
Tom - I sent this out to Class of '53 as an advance notice of our 55th reunion. Thought you might be interested.

Photo from 1953 yearbook, Hunting and Fishing Club. Look closely at what Harry Olynk has in his hand. What do you think would happen today if someone brought a .45 caliber handgun to class? How times have changed.
To relive the good old days, plan on attending the 55th reunion of the HHS class of '53 to be held October 17, 18 and 19, 2008.
Best regards,

HERE'S A BIRDS' EYE VIEW OF THE POST WAR FINANCIAL SITUATION IN THE BOARDS OF EDUCATION FROM HAMILTON, EWING AND LAWRENCE. INTERESTING!

1947: CLASS OF '42 PLANS THEIR FIFTH REUNION

IT WAS MY PRIVILEGE TO BE THE GUEST SPEAKER AT THE CLASS OF 1942 AS THEY CELEBRATED THEIR 65TH "AND FINAL" HIGH SCHOOL REUNION. BROTHER LEN WAS IN THE CLASS AS WAS MY LATE SISTER IN LAW, SISTER KATHLEEN BRITTON WHO WAS A CLOISTERED NUN. IT WAS ALSO MY PLEASURE TO MEET CHET FEEHAN, FROM THE HAMILTON FEEHAN FAMILY TREE. CHET WAS STILL AMONG THE ORGANIZERS AS HE WAS BACK IN THE EARLY YEARS OF HHS. (SORRY ABOUT THE POOR QUALITY PHOTO, CHET. IT IS AS IT APPEARS IN THE ORIGINAL.)

1947: GRAMMAR SCHOOL HONOR STUDENTS

THOSE HORNETS WHO WENT TO KUSER GRAMMAR SCHOOL DURING THE 40'S CAN SEE THEIR CLASS IN THE ABOVE GRAPHIC. THE EIGHTH GRADE ARE THOSE WHO WENT ON TO BECOME HHS '51. WORKING BACKWARDS YOU CAN OBVIOUSLY SEE THAT THE SEVENTH GRADE CONSTITUTES MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS IN THE CLASS OF '52, DOWNWARD TO RECEPTION GRADE, CLASS OF '59. HAPPY HUNTING!

1956: Clara Schlagel Stonaker passed away

From Jack Lacy, HHS'56, the following information on the passing of another classmate:
==================================
Sadly we report that Clara (Schlagel) Stonaker, HHS56, passed away Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22) at home. According to a family member who has been in touch with classmate Nancy (Higgins) Lettiere, Clara "...died with a hospice nurse at her bedside. All funeral arrangements were kept very private." She had resided for a number of years in the Toms River, NJ area but a check as late as earlier today of the Ocean County Observer ands the Asbury Park Press, the two newspapers serving Toms River, did not revel an obituary.

1947: NICK STILLWELL

SOME TIME AGO I ENTERED A POST BEMOANING THE FACT THAT WE TRIED TO ORGANIZE A HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION. UNFORTUNATELY, OUR EFFORTS WERE IN VAIN. AFTER MANY HOURS TRYING TO GET HAMILTON ALUMNI TO PARTICIPATE, WE GAVE UP THE PROJECT. APPARENTLY NICK AND HIS FELLOW HORNETS ALSO TRIED TO ORGANIZE AN ASSOCIATION. APPARENTLY IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. IT IS A MYSTERY THAT A SCHOOL WITH SUCH A SPLENDID HISTORICAL HERITAGE CAN'T SUPPORT THIS WORTHY PROJECT. THE LAST FORMAL INVOLVEMENT IN WHICH I PARTICIPATED AS AN ALUMNUS WAS IN THE EARLY '80'S WHEN ALL ALUMNI WERE INVITED TO THE ANNUAL "HOMECOMING" EVENT. NOTHING SINCE: CONCLUSION? APATHY ON THE PART
OF BOTH HAMILTON ALUMNI AND HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL .

1945: BILL COLLIS, U.S. COAST GUARD

BILL WAS ONE OF OUR MORE POPULAR FACULTY MEMBERS AT HAMILTON HIGH DURING THE 40'S AND 50'S. HERE WE SEE HIM AT HIS MILITARY STATION WITH THAT EVER-PRESENT PIPE.

1945: RICHARD DIVINE, HHS '42 - ANOTHER WWII HERO

HIS BROTHER DONALD WAS OUR PHYSICAL EDUCTION TEACHER DURING MY YEARS AT HAMILTON. DON WAS ALSO A ESERVE NAVY LIEUTENANT J.G. VETERAN OF WWII. DON WAS A VERY SOFT-SPOKEN MANY WHO HAD THE RESPECT OF ALL OF US WHO WERE IN HIS PHYS ED CLASS.

THESE HORNETS ARE CARD-CARRYING MEMBERS OF "THE GREATEST GENERATION." WE WILL TALK ABOUT THE IMPACT WORLD WAR II HAD ON THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS, AND RECALL SOME OF THE MUSIC OF THAT ERA. 1938: REMEMBERING THE GOOD TIMES

HERE'S A COLUMN I WROTE A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO FOCUSING ON HHS CLASS OF '39. IT WAS HERE THE GLOVER FAMILY DOCTOR DICK ZIEGLER WAS LOCATED ALONG WITH ALICE PARENT GETZ, MY GRAMMAR SCHOOL TEACHER.
THE ARTICLE ALSO GAVE A SHORT STORY ON TRENTON'S FABLED LENOX, INC. BEFORE THEY WENT TO CHINA FOR THEIR CHINA.

2007: BACK TO GRAMMAR SCHOOL WITH TOM GLOVER

WITH THE IMPRESSIVE NUMBER OF HITS ON MY HHS WEB SITE, I WOULD ASSUME THAT AT LEAST OR 2 OR 3 OR MAYBE EVEN 4 FUGITIVES FROM GRAMMAR SCHOOL DAYS OF THE 30'S 40'S AND 50'S WOULD FIND THIS PROGRAM OF INTEREST. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BE A KUSER SCHOOL KID TO REMEMBER LIFE AT KLOCKNER, MERCERVILLE, YARDVILLE, HAMILTON SQUARE, OR EVEN FARMINGDALE AND MAPLE SHADE TO APPRECIATE THE LIFE AND TIMES WE EXPERIENCED BACK BEFORE THE ADVENT OF THE COMPUTER, COPS IN SCHOOL, ETC. COME ON OUT AND ENJOY A HAPPY 2 HOURS OF REMEMBERING OUR "DEAR OLD GOLDEN RULE DAYS!" WE'LL REMEMBER DICK AND JANE, MULTIPLICATION TABLES, DIAGRAMMING SENTENCES, STAYING AFTER SCHOOL FOR CHEWING GUM IN CLASS, NO COMPUTERS, NO TYPEWRITERS, NOTHING BUT PAPER, PENCILS AND STRAIGHT PENS, RECEPTIVE STUDENTS AND DEDICATED TEACHERS.....WE'LL RECALL THEM ALL IN THIS INTERESTING PROGRAM WHICH I WILL BE PRESENTING AT KUSER MANSION. I HOPE TO SEE AT LEAST A FEW OF MY VIEWERS THERE!

1953: KUSER CLASS CLASS OF 1953

HEY LYNN STOCKTON. EITHER MY EMAIL PROVIDER IS LAX OR YOU HAVE BEEN TOO BUSY TO ACKNOWLEDGE WAS THIS GRAPHIC INCLUDED IN THE GRAPHICS I SENT TO YOU FOR YOUR UPCOMING REUNION? LITTLE BROTHER DONNIE GLOVER IS THE GUY IN THE FRONT ROW, 4TH FROM THE RIGHT. TODAY OR TOMORROW I WILL TRY TO RE-SIZE IT AN ELIMINATE THOSE AWFUL "MOIRE" DOTS ON THE PHOTO.

2007: JESSE ANDERSON 1933-2007

I JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM JESS ANDERSON'S' WIFE GAIL . JESS PASSED AWAY THIS AFTERNOON. I COUNTED JESS AMONG MY BEST FRIENDS. WE WENT FROM MISS MARY KELLY'S RECEPTION GRADE BACK IN 1939 RIGHT THROUGH KUSER GRAMMAR SCHOOL AND HAMILTON HIGH CLASS OF 1951. JESS HAD A VERY DISTINGUISHED CAREER. HE WAS THE TOWN'S CHIEF OF POLICE, AND LATER BECAME THE MAYOR OF SEASIDE PARK. YOU WILL BE MISSED, JESS, AND YOU WILL BE IN MY PRAYERS. MAY THE LORD WELCOME YOU INTO HIS HEAVENLY KINGDOM.
WE'LL MEET AGAIN.

1992: A VALIANT HHSW ALUMNI EFFORT CRASHED

WE PLANNED A PICNIC ---
BUT NOBODY CAME!
BACK IN 1992, I JOINED CAROL BENCIVENGO, LORRAINE MAY, MANNY BUTERA, AND A NUMBER OF HAMILTON ALUMNI IN A VALIANT EFFORT TO ORGANIZE A HAMILTON WEST ALUMNI ASSOCIATION.
DO YOU SEE THOSE ORANGE MEMBERSHIP CARDS IN THE GRAPHIC? THERE ARE TWO BOXES OF 500 EACH WHICH WERE NEVER TOUCHED! WE EVEN INSTITUTED A NEWSLETTER, "ALUMNI CRITERION." THE RESPONSE WAS UNDERWHELMING! LAST WEEK, LORRAINE FEEHAN MAY DROPPED OFF TWO HUGE BOXES OF THE MEMBERSHIP CARDS WE WERE SURE WOULD BE EAGERLY CLAIMED BY HAMILTON HORNETS. TO ADD TO THE HURT, MUCH TIME WAS SPENT AT OUR MEETINGS ESTABLISHING BYLAWS. ALL THAT MATERIAL IS BEING STORED IN MY OFFICE SHOULD THERE BE ANY ALUMNUS OR ALUMNI THAT WOULD LIKE TO RESUME THE QUEST. I WAS COMPLETELY BAFFLED BY THE LACK OF INTEREST IN THIS WORTHWHILE ENDEAVOR.

I HAVE FOUND A FREEWARE (100% FREE) DOWNLOAD WHICH WILL DO A PRETTY NICE JOB OF ZOOMING IN SO THE TEXT CAN BE READ.
IF YOU DECIDE TO DOWNLOAD IT. GO TO THE MENU AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN AND CHOOSE "ZOOM." IT WORKS WELL FOR ME AND I HOPE IT WILL BE AN ASSET FOR THOSE WHO NEED READABLE TEXT. IF NOT, IT IS EASY TO REMOVE FROM YOUR SYSTEM.

1952: HHS'52 FIFTY FIVE YEARS AND COUNTING

THESE ARE A SELECT FEW OF MY "NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS" FROM THE CLASS OF 1952 AT HAMILTON HIGH. AS I PAGED THROUGH THE 1952 "RETROSPECT" YEARBOOK, I PONDERED ON EACH AND EVERY PICTURE, RECALLED AN INCIDENT OR TWO WHICH RELATED TO MY RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT PARTICULAR PERSON, AND ADDED HIM OR HER TO THIS VIGNETTE. I INCLUDED THE PHOTOS OF THE GIRLS I LOVED, THE GIRLS THAT WERE THE SUBJECT OF MY NUMEROUS TEEN AGE CRUSHES, THE GUYS I KNEW, FONDLY RECALLING THE GREAT TIMES WE HAD PLAING UNSUPERVISED GAMES OF BASEBALL AT PLAAG'S GROVE, USUALLY WITH A BASEBALL RE-WRAPPED WITH FRICTION TAPE, AND A BRICK OR A TIN CAN LID FOR BASES. I PAUSED AN EXTRA MINUTE OR TWO AND RECALLED THAT HANDSOME NAVY OFFICER, HAROLD BILLS, TO WHOM THE CLASS DEDICATED THE 1952 YEARBOOK. I RECALL THE LOOK ON THE GIRLS' FACE WHENEVER HE ENTERED A CLASS ROOM DRESSED IN HIS NAVY OFFICER'S UNIFORM.

2007: LEA AND GINNY TERRY IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT

FROM SALLY ASHMEN TO JACK LACY, HHS '56, THE FOLLOWING NEWS:

Hi Jack...FYI...Ginny and Lea Terry were in a serious auto accident in Penna. 2 weeks ago, near Bowman's Hill. Lea was driving and they were hit broadside on the passenger side. Lea was just banged up- no fractures or serious injury. Ginny, however was admitted to intensive care in St. Mary's in Newtown with bruised bladder and heart, concussion, and 22 fractures including ribs, pelvis, right scapula. She is now at Care One of Ewing on Parkway Avenue. Organs are fine now--just having daily physical therapy. They are not allowing her to walk at all but do get her up on her feet to the bathroom in a wheelchair. I visited tonight and there is no estimate of how long they will keep her there but a stay at St. Lawrence rehab. seems to be a possibility. Lea is at home and his kids are transporting him back and forth to Ewing. She is, of course, very uncomfortable but being a real trooper. Having kept herself in good physical shape swimming and walking has been very much in her favor.

1944: THOSE REMARKABLE MCCLAIN SISTERS

HERE SHE IS BEFORE SHE BECAME MRS. VERONICA LARKIN. EVEN AS WE GLOVER BOYS WERE TOLD THAT WE ALL LOOKED ALIKE, SO TOO DO THE MCCLAIN GIRLS! NOT ONLY DO THEY HAVE THE SAME FACIAL RESEMBLENCE, THEY ALL BROUGHT THEIR DISCIPLINED UP-BRINGING TO THEIR RESPECTIVE CLASSROOMS. THOSE OF US WHO WERE STUDENTS UNDER TUTELAGE OF THE MCCLAIN SISTERS, QUICKLY LEARNED RIGHT FROM WRONG, AND THE MEANING OF SELF CONTROL.

HERE'S MY HHS '51 CLASSMATE BILL BAGGOTT AS HE APPEARED IN A MASONIC HOME VARIETY PROGRAM. I NEVER ASKED BILL IF HE WAS A BOY SOPRANO IN HIS YOUNGER YEARS, BUT I WOULD BET THAT HE WAS. HIS VOICE WAS ETHEREAL TIMES TEN.

2007: STARTING SUNDAY, JULY 8TH

I will be hosting the early Sunday evening music programs at the Kuser Farm Gazebo this summer from 6 to 7:30 or 8 PM. The success of my outreach programs to senior citizen groups throughout the area over the past 20-plus years led me to believe that I could bring the same musical program to the summer visitors that I have been performing over the years. Most of those who attend the summer Kuser concerts love and respond to the "easy listening" nostalgia type of music, as opposed to the contemporary music of the younger generation. We'll be singing, dancing and listening to the music of Perry Como, Mario Lanze, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Barry Mannilow, Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney, Don Cornell. Classic country music, easy listening love ballads, silly songs, the 40's, the 50's, the 60's, World War II, you name it, we're probably going to sing it.

ALL SONGS WILL HAVE UNDERSTANDABLE LYRICS!
ALL SONGS WILL HAVE A MELODY!
ALL SONGS WILL HAVE A "G" RATING!

I hope to see many of my senior citizen friends at the concerts, and I encourage them to bring members of the younger generation to listen to "The Music We Grew Up With.
"OH YEAH, I FORGOT TO TELL YOU ABOUT THAT LITTLE CONCRETE DANCE FLOOR IN FRONT OF THE GAZEBO. I WELCOME ALL OF THE DANCERS IN OUR MIDST. WE'LL HAVE POLKAS, LINE DANCING, JITTERBUG, WALTZES, FOX TROTS, OLD FASHIONED "CHEEK TO CHEEK" DANCING AND MAYBE EVEN "THE STROLL!

"THERE WILL BE NO RAIN DATES.
