"Pop" Mitchell: A Gentleman's Gentleman

Thanks to Don Wright, HHS 45 for this photo of Charles "Pop" Mitchell. I had Mr. Mitchell for 2 years of print shop. I can still hear Pop's veddy veddy British accent. He was replaced by Bob Toft in the early 1950's.

1947: Jim Coursen


Nearly every faculty member had a nickname. They weren't insulting nicknames. Jim Coursen was known as "Jim Crow." He was a strict disciplinarian, but a true gentleman. The only disciplinary run-in that I experienced in my high school years was when I was sneaking a between class kiss from Judy in the hallway. A definite HHS "no-no."

1950: Lovely Ladies All


I remember when the girls wore one piece bathing suits and calf-length dresses (they called it the "new look."), These gals would never dream of wearing a"bikini" bathing suit or skin tight jeans. Ahh....we have really progressed..........uhh......haven't we?

1942: Chet Feehan

One of the wonderful things about the first 50 years of HHS is the "small town" feel that it maintained right up to the 1960's when Hamilton began to evolve into the huge megalopolis it is today. Back then, you knew many of the past class members, and many of them went to school with your brother
and - or sister. Chet was a classmate of my brother Len and my sister in law, Kathleen Britton.

1951: Wendell Phillips

The nickname "Sneaky Pete" wasn't meant to be a derogatory moniker. It was really a badge of honor we bestowed on Mr. Phillips for his masterful ability to catch those of us who tried to sneak a cigarette within that no smoking zone which was defined as "3 telephone poles" away from the school. Mr. Phillips was the consummate gentleman, and I remember him for his soft spoken demeanor, those stiff white collared shirts, and very shiny black shoes.

1951: Tulip Time

Yup! I still remember that song, and just sang it for you. Lee Belardino, I'll bet you sang it with me way out there in California. HEY....THIS IS MY WEBSITE, AND I'M EXERCISING MY "WEBMASTER'S RIGHTS" TO POST MULTITUDINOUS (?) EXTRACTS FROM HHS-51, "THE CLASS WITH CLASS!" By the way, the third girl from the left in the pic is my dear wife of 52 years, Judy Britton.

HHS '47: Their 58th Reunion, 2005


Here's a few of the planners for the class of 1947's 58th reunion which was held at the
Washington Crossing Inn on September 9, 2005. 'tis a puzzlement to me as to why many of the HHS reunions are held out of town. If I had my "druthers," it would be a Hamilton venue.
