1950: Dick Stoner Obit

Dick Stoner, HHS '50, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2009. I remember Dick as an upper classman at Kuser School back in the 1940's. As I recall, he lived in the Bromley section of Hamilton. His obit below is from the Trenton Times.

Richard Grant Stoner POINT PLEASANT

Richard Grant Stoner, 76, died Saturday at Cooper University Hospital, Camden. Mr. Stoner was born and raised in Hamilton and lived in Point Pleasant for the past 27 years. He graduated from Hamilton High School, attended Trenton Junior College and graduated from Rider University. He served during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Naval Reserves and was an active member of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association. Mr. Stoner was a project engineer for Switlik Parachute Co. in Trenton for many years, prior to becoming disabled in 1976. After moving to Point Pleasant he employed his artistic skills as a caricaturist for more than 20 years. During the summers he drew at Jenkinson's on the Point Pleasant boardwalk, as well as at fairs and parties throughout the state. He became a very active advocate for the handicapped, and sat on the advisory board for Personal Advisory Service Program for 14 years. Accompanied by his beloved dog Chelsea he was a lecturer in the Disability Awareness Through Education (D.A.T.E.) program, which reached out to approximately 10,000 Ocean County school children. Mr. Stoner was a lifelong auto racing fan and a photographer for the National Speedsport News. He was inducted into the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club Hall of Fame in 1999. He was a former member of the Unitarian Church of Princeton. Surviving are a son, Jeffrey Stoner of Haddonfield; a daughter, Nora Stoner of East Windsor; a brother and sister- in-law, William Stoner and his wife Patricia of Ewing; his former wife Vivian L. Stoner of Barrington; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of arrangements.
