THESE HORNETS ARE CARD-CARRYING MEMBERS OF "THE GREATEST GENERATION." WE WILL TALK ABOUT THE IMPACT WORLD WAR II HAD ON THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS, AND RECALL SOME OF THE MUSIC OF THAT ERA. WE'LL ALSO BE REMEMBERING AIR RAIDS, "GREETINGS" FROM UNCLE SAM, RATION STAMPS, FIFTH COLUMNIST, AND THE SCARY REPORTS OF NAZI SUBMARINES OFF THE JERSEY COAST ALONG WITH JAPANESE SHIPS FIRING ON REFINERIES ALOGNG THE CALIFORNIA COAST.

2007: BACK TO GRAMMAR SCHOOL WITH TOM GLOVER

WITH THE IMPRESSIVE NUMBER OF HITS ON MY HHS WEB SITE, I WOULD ASSUME THAT AT LEAST OR 2 OR 3 OR MAYBE EVEN 4 FUGITIVES FROM GRAMMAR SCHOOL DAYS OF THE 30'S 40'S AND 50'S WOULD FIND THIS PROGRAM OF INTEREST. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BE A KUSER SCHOOL KID TO REMEMBER LIFE AT KLOCKNER, MERCERVILLE, YARDVILLE, HAMILTON SQUARE, OR EVEN FARMINGDALE AND MAPLE SHADE TO APPRECIATE THE LIFE AND TIMES WE EXPERIENCED BACK BEFORE THE ADVENT OF THE COMPUTER, COPS IN SCHOOL, ETC. COME ON OUT AND ENJOY A HAPPY 2 HOURS OF REMEMBERING OUR "DEAR OLD GOLDEN RULE DAYS!" WE'LL REMEMBER DICK AND JANE, MULTIPLICATION TABLES, DIAGRAMMING SENTENCES, STAYING AFTER SCHOOL FOR CHEWING GUM IN CLASS, NO COMPUTERS, NO TYPEWRITERS, NOTHING BUT PAPER, PENCILS AND STRAIGHT PENS, RECEPTIVE STUDENTS AND DEDICATED TEACHERS.....WE'LL RECALL THEM ALL IN THIS INTERESTING PROGRAM WHICH I WILL BE PRESENTING AT KUSER MANSION. 2007: JESSE ANDERSON 1933-2007

I JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM JESS ANDERSON'S' WIFE GAIL . JESS PASSED AWAY THIS AFTERNOON. I COUNTED JESS AMONG MY BEST FRIENDS. WE WENT FROM MISS MARY KELLY'S RECEPTION GRADE BACK IN 1939 RIGHT THROUGH KUSER GRAMMAR SCHOOL AND HAMILTON HIGH CLASS OF 1951. JESS HAD A VERY DISTINGUISHED CAREER. HE WAS THE TOWN'S CHIEF OF POLICE, AND LATER BECAME THE MAYOR OF SEASIDE PARK. YOU WILL BE MISSED, JESS, AND YOU WILL BE IN MY PRAYERS. MAY THE LORD WELCOME YOU INTO HIS HEAVENLY KINGDOM.

BACK IN 1992, I JOINED CAROL BENCIVENGO, LORRAINE MAY, MANNY BUTERA, AND A NUMBER OF HAMILTON ALUMNI IN A VALIANT EFFORT TO ORGANIZE A HAMILTON WEST ALUMNI ASSOCIATION.
DO YOU SEE THOSE ORANGE MEMBERSHIP CARDS IN THE GRAPHIC? THERE ARE TWO BOXES OF 500 EACH WHICH WERE NEVER TOUCHED! WE EVEN INSTITUTED A NEWSLETTER, "ALUMNI CRITERION." THE RESPONSE WAS UNDERWHELMING! LAST WEEK, LORRAINE FEEHAN MAY DROPPED OFF TWO HUGE BOXES OF THE MEMBERSHIP CARDS WE WERE SURE WOULD BE EAGERLY CLAIMED BY HAMILTON HORNETS. TO ADD TO THE HURT, MUCH TIME WAS SPENT AT OUR MEETINGS ESTABLISHING BYLAWS. ALL THAT MATERIAL IS BEING STORED IN MY OFFICE SHOULD THERE BE ANY ALUMNUS OR ALUMNI THAT WOULD LIKE TO RESUME THE QUEST. M. Eileen Peoples Julian HAMILTON TOWNSHIP - M. Eileen Peoples Julian, 68, died Saturday at Compassionate Care Center in Trenton. Born in Trenton, she lived in Hamilton Township most of her life. She recently returned from Largo, FL where she lived for the past eight years. She was an administrative assistant working for both the State of New Jersey and Lacy Communications in Mercerville. Mrs. Julian was a graduate of Cathedral High School Class of 1957. She was a member of the Our Lady Sorrows PTA, the Hamilton Township Republican Organization and enjoyed various crafts. Daughter of the late Frank and Mary Glendon Peoples, mother of the late Michele Julian, she is survived by her husband of 48 years, Arthur J. Julian; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Laura M. and Howard Black of Chesterfield, Sharon A. and Peter Dunham of Robbinsville, Mary Kay and Andrew Cary of Bordentown and Wanda Rutledge of Hamilton Township; eight grandchildren, Carleen and Lyndsay Snyder, Aaron Black, Sara Jane and Gregory Dunham, Katherine, Sally and Andrew (Doozer) Cary; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Joanne Peoples of Atlanta, GA; three brothers-in-law, Thomas, John and Paul Julian; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 1863 Hamilton Ave. in Hamilton Township. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Calling hours will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home Donations in her memory may be made to the Compassionate Care Hospice, 601 Hamilton Ave., Trenton, NJ 08629.

On Monday morning she fell in their bedroom and broke her hip. They were able to put a pin in at R.W.J. Hamilton and today she was transferred back to Care One for rehab. again. I hope to get out to see her by the end of the week.

Robert M. Turkington Sr. Mercerville - Robert M. Turkington Sr., 69, died Tuesday at his home. Born in Trenton, he was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Turkington was a lifelong member of Bakery Drivers and Salesman - Local 194, retiring as a driver in 2000 from Maier's Bakery. He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time in his garden. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Son of the late Russell and Lillian Young Turkington, father of the late David J. Turkington and brother of the late Marilyn Diehl, he is survived by his wife Eleanor (Ketterer) Turkington; four sons and their wives, James and Brenda Turkington, Robert M. Jr., and Debbie Turkington, Shawn and Maureen Boyer and James and Sasha Boyer all of Hamilton; six grandchildren, Kevin, Kelly, Brianna, Matthew, Shawn Jr., and Ashley; two nieces, Sally Stevens and Kathleen Cokenakes; one nephew, Steve Worth; and his loving companions Tiffany and Rambo. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday at the M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 1863 Hamilton Ave. Entombment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

THESE ARE A SELECT FEW OF MY "NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS" FROM THE CLASS OF 1952 AT HAMILTON HIGH. AS I PAGED THROUGH THE 1952 "RETROSPECT" YEARBOOK, I PONDERED ON EACH AND EVERY PICTURE, RECALLED AN INCIDENT OR TWO WHICH RELATED TO MY RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT PARTICULAR PERSON, AND ADDED HIM OR HER TO THIS VIGNETTE. I INCLUDED THE PHOTOS OF THE GIRLS I LOVED, THE GIRLS THAT WERE THE SUBJECT OF MY NUMEROUS TEEN AGE CRUSHES, THE GUYS I KNEW, FONDLY RECALLING THE GREAT TIMES WE HAD PLAING UNSUPERVISED GAMES OF BASEBALL AT PLAAG'S GROVE, USUALLY WITH A BASEBALL RE-WRAPPED WITH FRICTION TAPE, AND A BRICK OR A TIN CAN LID FOR BASES. I PAUSED AN EXTRA MINUTE OR TWO AND RECALLED THAT HANDSOME NAVY OFFICER, HAROLD BILLS, TO WHOM THE CLASS DEDICATED THE 1952 YEARBOOK. I RECALL THE LOOK ON THE GIRLS' FACE WHENEVER HE ENTERED A CLASS ROOM DRESSED IN HIS NAVY OFFICER'S UNIFORM.

IT WAS THE YEAR OF THE TRILON AND PERISPHERE AT THE NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR. AMERICAN WAS BEGINNING TO RECOVER FROM THE GREAT DEPRESSION. IT WAS THE YEAR OF GILLETTE BLUE BLADES, '39 NASH AND LASALLE AUTOMOBILES, AND DOUGLAS DC3

2007: LEA AND GINNY TERRY IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT

FROM SALLY ASHMEN TO JACK LACY, HHS '56, THE FOLLOWING NEWS:

Hi Jack...FYI...Ginny and Lea Terry were in a serious auto accident in Penna. 2 weeks ago, near Bowman's Hill. Lea was driving and they were hit broadside on the passenger side. Lea was just banged up- no fractures or serious injury. Ginny, however was admitted to intensive care in St. Mary's in Newtown with bruised bladder and heart, concussion, and 22 fractures including ribs, pelvis, right scapula. She is now at Care One of Ewing on Parkway Avenue. Organs are fine now--just having daily physical therapy. They are not allowing her to walk at all but do get her up on her feet to the bathroom in a wheelchair. I visited tonight and there is no estimate of how long they will keep her there but a stay at St. Lawrence rehab. seems to be a possibility. Lea is at home and his kids are transporting him back and forth to Ewing. She is, of course, very uncomfortable but being a real trooper. Having kept herself in good physical shape swimming and walking has been very much in her favor.

I will be hosting the early Sunday evening music programs at the Kuser Farm Gazebo this summer from 6 to 7:30 or 8 PM. The success of my outreach programs to senior citizen groups throughout the area over the past 20-plus years led me to believe that I could bring the same musical program to the summer visitors that I have been performing over the years. Most of those who attend the summer Kuser concerts love and respond to the "easy listening" nostalgia type of music, as opposed to the contemporary music of the younger generation. We'll be singing, dancing and listening to the music of Perry Como, Mario Lanze, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Barry Mannilow, Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney, Don Cornell. Classic country music, easy listening love ballads, silly songs, the 40's, the 50's, the 60's, World War II, you name it, we're probably going to sing it.

ALL SONGS WILL HAVE UNDERSTANDABLE LYRICS!
ALL SONGS WILL HAVE A MELODY!
ALL SONGS WILL HAVE A "G" RATING!

I hope to see many of my senior citizen friends at the concerts, and I encourage them to bring members of the younger generation to listen to "The Music We Grew Up With.

1949: A PRETTY GIRL IS LIKE A MELODY

Yup, just like a melody! These 3 ladies were members of Yard's Fashion Board. I didn't know Ms. Bush, but the late Maryanne Cahill was in choir with me one year. Jackie Strohauer was movie star beautiful.

1951: The Late James Coursen

He was another educator who was a strict disciplinarian. I don't know where it came from, but in my class of 1951, he was known by the rather demeaning nickname, "Jim Crow." Mr. and Mrs. Coursen retired to Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. Someone sent him one of my columns from the old "Mercer Messenger" wherein I was probably writing one of my "Hamilton High School Diary" columns. He took the time to write to me and tell me he was receiving copies of my column and how much he enjoyed reminiscing about those carefree years. Jim Coursen was the Vice Principal at HHS, and earlier, he was the Principal at the old Kuser Annex.
